A 150,000 m² retail concourse. The atmosphere of an asset is measured in minutes of dwell time, and those minutes add up to tenant spend. A concourse on this scale reads easily as a place to pass through: visitors cross it without slowing down.

The Christmas season is the moment to change that. We designed a lighting scheme in which part of the work stays in place and keeps working after the holidays: the seasonal budget turns, in part, into a permanent asset for the centre.

Columns Become Trees

A column is usually a dead zone in the visual environment of a shopping centre. Here the columns became lighting trees: the vertical rhythm draws the eye along the concourse. Overhead, the hanging elements build up into a dense ceiling of light.

Visitors find themselves inside a considered environment and slow down - dwell time grows, and tenant spend grows with it.

Light That Stays

The woven lighting spheres were designed with a neutral aesthetic on purpose. After the Christmas season they stayed in the concourse as a permanent lighting element and kept working for another six months.

Part of the seasonal budget became a year-round asset for the centre, with no extra spend.

Installation You Never See

Each of the 450-plus lighting pieces arrives on site ready to connect. Standardised joints cut the installation time in half: the team assembles the system with the technical work already resolved.

The three weeks of installation in a working concourse ran on night shifts only. The build stayed out of sight of visitors; the tenants got through the season without ever noticing the work.

Impact

The seasonal budget kept working long after the holidays

The woven lighting spheres stayed in the concourse for six months beyond the Christmas season - part of the holiday budget became permanent lighting for the asset, with no extra spend. Installation ran without a single hour of closure. The project is part of a long-running contract with a leading international operator of family shopping centres.
