Focal point

Plaza Tverskaya is the city's central square on the main tourist route. Pedestrian and tourist flows cross it every day, but they cross it in passing, without stopping.

The brief was to turn the square into a destination: a place people come to, where they stay and which they photograph. The audience is as demanding as it gets - the whole city at once.

Three planes of perception

The square was designed to work at three distances at once.

  • Far plane. A light gateway several storeys high. The silhouette of the square reads from the surrounding roads and draws the flow in before a person has even decided to come closer.
  • Mid plane. Backlit firs in planters and side galleries divide the square into zones. The visitor senses the route and stays longer than planned.
  • Close plane. Openwork ornament on the arches, crafted by hand. Up close, every element holds the eye in detail and prompts a photograph.

Installation in a working city

The square did not close for a single day. Installation took place across a live urban environment, in the historic centre under heritage protection.

The concept factored in the regulations for city events and the protection restrictions. The large-format gateways were sized for wind and snow loads. Heavy machinery worked in night-time windows, coordinated with the municipal services. The season ran in full without ever shutting the square.

Impact

The square joined the 'A Journey into Christmas' route

A square people passed through became a destination. Over 30 events in a single season - fairs, concerts, activations - and a place on the 'A Journey into Christmas' tourist route. Coverage reached national and international media in one season, with no advertising budget: visitors photographed the square and shared it themselves. We ran the full cycle across the living heart of the city, without a single day of closure.

30 events in one season, zero days of closure

On a landmark square we build a festive environment across three planes of perception: far, mid and close. That is how a central square became a destination in a single season, without interrupting the flow.
