The square outside the Radisson Collection is historic urban fabric, with a constant flow of tourists and century-old architecture behind it. A project at an address like this reads as part of the city from the first moment, and the bar for quality is high by default.
The commission came with a single request: a form recognised the world over, set on a prime city address.
A form that reads without translation
The matryoshka is a figure recognised without translation anywhere in the world. A tourist identifies the form at once, with no captions or explanations.
The form is read immediately; the material and the execution are contemporary. The piece settles into the historic context of the square and stays current.
A mirror of the city
The steel is polished to a mirror finish. The sculptures reflect the surrounding architecture, the sky and the people, and change minute by minute with the city while remaining themselves.
The piece becomes a magnet for visitor photos: a visitor steps closer, sees themselves and the square in the reflection, and takes the shot.
Engineered for years of street use
Seven sculptures are brought together into a single composition, with heights from 1.7 to 4.8 metres. The material is 316L steel, mirror-polished, with golden kokóshniks carved by hand.
Wind-load calculations and corrosion resistance were sized for permanent street use. The composition was installed in 2021 and has stood on the same site ever since: it has weathered winters, rain and shifts in climate with no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
We developed the conceptual proposal and delivered the fabrication and installation of the composition.
We co-authored the concept with an invited creative collective.
Impact
The composition has stood on the same site since 2021
From day one, the composition became a magnet for visitor photos and has held its organic reach on social media with no advertising budget. Since 2021 it has occupied one of the busiest addresses in the city, and the winters and rain it has weathered have needed no maintenance. It is a project you can visit and see in place today.
